Client - Hunter Water Corporation, NSW

Total Project Value - under $1 Million

Project Overview and Scope

Hunter H2O was engaged by Hunter Water Corporation to manage and deliver on its behalf the rehabilitation of underground pipeline structures in a popular, occupied area adjacent to Merewether Baths.

The Merewether ERS was constructed in 1903 and originally operated as Newcastle’s primary ocean outfall. In early 2011, Newcastle experienced heavy rainfall, this combined with a combination of external factors including; high tide, wave action resulted in and partial blockage of the overflow pipe. Urgent action was required to rehabilitate the pipeline to mitigate the risk of overflows in this area.

The project posed several site constraints which required Hunter H2O to carefully plan around. A detailed assessment was undertaken to identify a construction methodology which could be delivered safely, during the minimum possible timeframe so as to minimise disruption to recreational users in the area.

Key Success Factors

As part of this planning process, Hunter H2O undertook an extensive community consultation process with the public and known local commercial and recreational stakeholders. Hunter H2O also worked closely with Newcastle City Council to confine the works within the minimum possible area to ensure that the main baths pool was able to remain open for the duration of the works.

Due to numerous unique technical challenges associated with this project, HH2O sought early contractor involvement during the planning/design phase. This early involvement lead to the identification and ultimate selection of nonintrusive rehabilitation technique which not been used at this scale before in Australia. Over 1000kg of customised rehabilitation Hunter H2O Project Sheet October 2016 materials was fabricated in Europe and urgently air freighted to Australia for the works. Once onsite the rehabilitation material had a shelf life of <24hr and required installation to proceeded throughout the night.

The project was successfully implemented achieving the required functional / quality outcomes within the target timeframe, on budget and with effective public safety and environmental controls. Positive feedback was received from the community regarding the proactive consultation and timely execution of the works.
